Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition that affects one of the nerves that provides feeling and function to the hand. This nerve, known as the median nerve, runs from the forearm down into the hand through a passageway in your wrist called the carpal tunnel. Carpal tunnel syndrome is characterized by numbness, tingling and pain in the hand or wrist, often affecting your thumb, index, and middle fingers.

At Mirza Orthopedics on Long Island, our physicians are leaders in providing carpal tunnel treatment. Whether your condition can be treated with nonsurgical options or is more advanced and requires surgery, orthopedic hand doctors Dr. Ather Mirza and Dr. Justin Mirza will tailor a treatment plan for your needs.

For those patients requiring carpal tunnel release surgery, Mirza Orthopedics offers a cutting-edge endoscopic release system, a proprietary treatment that Dr. Ather Mirza developed. The A.M. Endoscopic Carpal Tunnel Release System delivers more precision, control, and best of all, faster recovery times for patients. What causes carpal tunnel syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by compression and irritation of the median nerve where it passes through the carpal tunnel, which is located on the palm side of the wrist. It may be caused by a number of factors, all of which can lead to the swelling of the tissues surrounding the flexor tendons in the wrist, resulting in crowding, irritation, and pressure placed on the median nerve.

In many cases, there is no single identifiable cause of carpal tunnel syndrome. Rather, a combination of factors may contribute to the development of the condition.

You may be more likely to develop carpal tunnel syndrome if:

  • You have experienced prior wrist injuries, such as fractures or dislocations
  • You have a narrow carpal tunnel
  • You are female
  • You experience an alteration in your body fluid balance, which is common during menopause and pregnancy
  • You perform repetitive motions or activities that require flexing of the wrist
  • You have medical conditions including diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis or thyroid disorders

What are the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome?

If you have carpal tunnel syndrome, you will likely experience:

  • Numbness and tingling in the hand, particularly in the thumb, index or middle fingers
  • Sensation that your thumb, index, middle or ring fingers have “fallen asleep” particularly when holding something
  • Discomfort or pain in the hand or wrist
  • Pain traveling up the arm toward the shoulder
  • Difficulty with finger coordination or weakness
  • Loss of muscle in the thumb

Carpal tunnel symptoms typically start gradually with numbness and tingling that comes and goes, along with wrist discomfort. Over time, your symptoms may become more constant.

What does treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome entail?

For some patients, treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome may involve conservative measures, such as:

  • Taking anti-inflammatory medications
  • Wearing a wrist splint or brace at night or during activities that aggravate symptoms in order to keep the wrist in a neutral position
  • Avoiding activities that make symptoms worse
  • Getting steroid injections

In some cases of carpal tunnel syndrome, a patient may need to undergo surgery known as a carpal tunnel release in order to achieve long-term symptom relief and prevent potentially irreversible nerve damage. Surgery is only considered once conservative measures fail to produce successful outcomes. Severe cases requiring surgery may include when a patient is experiencing constant numbness or wasting of the thumb muscles.

How is carpal tunnel surgery at Mirza Orthopedics different?

endoscopic-carpal-tunnel-releaseMirza Orthopedics is pleased to offer a cutting-edge, minimally invasive endoscopic carpal tunnel release surgery. Our system, developed by Dr. Ather Mirza, utilizes a clear cannula (a small tube) that provides complete protection and 360-degree visualization of the median nerve and ligament throughout the procedure. Using a patented scope-mounting blade, the technique allows the surgeon to view and precisely release the transverse carpal ligament with ease and safety.

In addition to the advantages provided by our endoscopic carpal tunnel release during the procedure, this innovative technique means improved patient recovery outcomes as well, including:

  • Smaller incision and scar compared to other open techniques
  • Early range of motion and return to daily activities
  • Less trauma and pain
